Dear PETA: Infertility is not a joke!

Yesterday I came across hundreds of angry tweets against PETA. It took me about half an hour to figure out what the big deal was. Here I was thinking they did something hypocritical, something to do with animals. But I was wrong. I never in a million years thought a company like PETA would do something this discourteous. The newest add campaign on the PETA website -  In honor of National Infertility Week (April 24 – 30), PETA will give one free vasectomy to a man who has recently had his companion dog or cat neutered.

You have got to *$^#@!* kidding me?! In honor of National Infertility Week they are offering up a free vasectomy?!?  I’d like to know who the “brains” was behind this genius idea. How could they honestly think offering up something that prevents babies on a week honoring those who are unable to have babies be a good idea?!

Unless they were going for a Lyndsay Lohan/Charlie Sheen attempt and assumed any press is good press?!?! Maybe?

It makes you wonder if anyone who works for PETA is or has suffered from infertility? They obviously didn’t put themselves in the shoes of someone, anyone who suffers from infertility and think of what it must feel like to spend  years devoted to fixing the issue at hand to create a family they have always dreamed of.  They must not care that one out of every three couples suffer from infertility. I can’t see someone doing something as silly as this for breast cancer awareness week for example and  I’m sure PETA wouldn’t respond very well to someone promoting “In honor of Animal cruelty awareness week, we encourage everyone to kick a cat”.

The hard part for me is that I am a die hard animal lover. I can’t even sit through 5 seconds of those commercials for the humane society. When my husband comes across news stories of animal cruelty he hides them from me because he knows I’ll have a melt down. When I see a lost dog running up the street, my heart breaks. I am 10000% against animal cruelty, but for some reason I have never really been a fan of PETA, and now I can honestly say I have lost pretty much all respect for this organization.

Infertility, is undeniably a big deal to me. So many people suffer from this desease every single day. I wish so much that there was more public information on infertility. I wish more women would come forward about dealing with infertility. Education and support groups are very few and far between and I try very hard to get as much information out there about this subject. For a huge company like PETA to poke fun at a very serious topic is doing the complete opposite of what so many of us infertile couples are trying so hard to accomplish.

Have you ever heard of the saying “you get more bees with honey than you do with vinegar?”  Maybe PETA should adapt that policy, and instead of mocking people, focus on the positive.  I’m sure they could promote their organization and tasteless campaign for a free vasectomy without it honoring National Infertility Week. Last I heard, PETA had received over 10,000 emails and over 20,000 tweets against this add campaign. You’d think out of respect for infertile couples all over the world, and out of respect for INFERTILITY AWARENESS WEEK they would grow some balls, admit it was a bad move on their part, and take down the add.

That is all…..
